Automatically translating in-game Japanese text to another language

From Dragon Quest X
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Dragon Quest X is written entirely in Japanese. For those who don't read or understand the language, this can prove daunting at first. Thankfully, a few members of the community have put together some tools to help players that don't read the language still get a general idea of what's going on. These tools are only relevant for the PC version of the game.

Tools[edit]

DeepL Translate - Desktop application that allows you to enter text of several languages and have them translated on the fly

ahkmon - Written by Serany (with inspiration from Shobu's clipmon) who can both be found on the Dragon Quest X Gaijins Discord

  • This tool will grab the dialog text from Dragon Quest X, send the text to DeepL for translating and send it to a customizable overlay for you to use.
  • The latest version can always be found here and the source here

Prerequisites[edit]

DeepL Translate: Once you've obtained and installed the above tools, you will want to launch DeepL Translate. Ensure the source language is "Japanese" and the destination language is your desired language. With it still open, click the hamburger menu in the top right and click on "Settings". Under "DeepL Shortcut", you can optionally click "Deactivate shortcut" to not accidentally paste contents you don't want into the box.

The latest documentation on how to use ahkmon can be found in the [README](https://github.com/jmctune/ahkmon/blob/main/README.md) within the repo.
