Dragon Quest X uses a vocation system (or "class", "profession", "job") where the player can choose between one of 23 different vocations to choose from. Different vocations are categorized into types of basic, advanced and master.

Basic Types

Basic types are vocations that are available to you at the immediate start of your adventure when selecting your first vocation. They require less total experience to level than their advanced and master counterparts. A basic vocation does not indicate that it is lesser than the other types. All of these types start at level 1. Basic types consist of Warrior, Priest, Mage, Thief, Martial Artist and Minstrel.

Advanced Types

Advanced types are introduced during your adventure in the form of a quest to unlock them. They require more total experience to level than basic types. These vocations often require meeting certain requirements to unlock, including building on the basic types by meeting a certain level requirement, or completing prior quests. Some of the older advanced vocations start at level 1, while the newer ones start at level 50. Advanced types consist of Battle Master, Paladin, Armamentalist, Ranger, Sage, Superstar, Monster Master, Item Master, Dancer, Fortune Teller, Druid, Death Master, Demon Swordsman and Pirate.

Master Types

Master types are added in later expansions and play like a combination of two different vocations. As of today, master types have several requirements that must be met in order to be eligible to unlock them. They require leveling two specific vocations to level 100 (dependent on the vocation), all of the skill quests must be completed, as well as completion of the master quest. Once unlocked, all master vocations start at level 100. They consist of Guardian and Dragomancer.
